Collection: WYSIWYG LPS

WYSIWYG, an acronym for "What You See Is What You Get," refers to a specific method of selling corals in the aquarium trade. This approach allows aquarists to purchase corals that are photographed and displayed exactly as they will appear in their tanks. Among the various types of corals available, Large Polyp Stony (LPS) corals are particularly popular due to their vibrant colors and unique shapes.

LPS corals are characterized by their large, fleshy polyps and hard calcium carbonate skeletons. They belong to the order Scleractinia and are known for their ability to create stunning displays in reef aquariums. Common examples of LPS corals include species such as Euphyllia (Hammer and Frogspawn corals), Acanthastrea, and Lobophyllia. These corals not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of an aquarium but also play a crucial role in maintaining the overall health of the aquatic ecosystem.

One of the key factors to consider when keeping LPS corals is their lighting requirements. These corals thrive under moderate to high light conditions, typically requiring a light intensity of around 200 to 400 PAR (Photosynthetically Active Radiation). Proper lighting is essential for the photosynthetic zooxanthellae that live within the coral tissues, as they provide the necessary energy for growth and health.

In addition to lighting, water quality is paramount for the successful cultivation of LPS corals. Parameters such as pH, salinity, and nutrient levels must be carefully monitored. The ideal pH range for LPS corals is between 8.1 and 8.4, while salinity should be maintained around 1.025 to 1.027 specific gravity. Regular water changes and the use of high-quality filtration systems can help maintain these parameters, ensuring a stable environment for coral growth.
